RIVERVIEW, Fla. — This week’s Everyday Hero has dedicated her life to helping horses that have been abused.
Shawn Jayroe has dedicated her life to the animals at RVR Horse Rescue, the non-profit she started fifteen years ago for horses suffering from cruelty.
“I mean they’re like automobiles to people,” said Jayroe. “If they don’t run, they throw them away. It’s horrible to me. It’s abusive.”
Volunteer Lisa Gold was working with a 12-year-old horse named Pizogeno, who came to RVR Horse Rescue as the result of a felony cruelty case.
“When he first came in, he was really aggressive and confused and didn’t understand people,” said Gold.
Gold has since spent lots of time working with him to regain his trust and find him a good home, and the results have been great.
Two older horses, Laura and Maria, are tougher to find homes for because of their age, but they are welcome to live out the rest of their years at RVR Horse Rescue.
Shawn says support from the community is key.
“They can come out here and sponsor a horse of half-sponsor a horse, or they can sponsor a horse and become that horse’s barn buddy, said Jayroe. “It’s kinda like they own a horse and it’s just to pay for feed and their feet while they’re getting through their rehab time in order to adopt them out.”
Thanks to Shawn and the volunteers at RVR Horse Rescue, these abused horses now found their safe place.
